Debenhams, London

Well we have to include at least one Valentines scheme we guess.  Scouring around town there are not a lot of brands promoting this commercial event (strangely, yet thankfully) as this is not our favourite event of the year - but that's just us.  However, that said, the installation at Debenhams right now is quite a corker with these really interesting three dimensional heart forms highlighted with Pink lighting.  So, there you go, one obligatory scheme, although we have say, a very good one.

Kunsthal Charlottenborg, Copenhagen

While this installation is not of course a retail store window we do look for inspiration beyond the usual areas such as brands and what is happening on the high street when we produce our own work and as this was such a gem of a find that we couldn't not include it here.  The Kunshal Charlottenborg itself dates back to 1883 and has been the venue for showing various contemporary Artists, new talents and providing glimpses into the future.  This particular piece by the German Artist Hito Steyerl called Factory of the Sun 'is a ground breaking immersive video installation that addresses the constant flow of images and advanced image technology of the present day with references to surveillance, computer games, globalisation, modern warfare and anti-capitalist movements'.  The opening line here is 'this game plays you'.  Scary stuff, but right on the pulse of where we are all going.

Hermes, Copenhagen

We do love a great Hermes window when we see one as the quality if their installations is so superb, usually.  We dont know whether this store is on the periphery of their priorities (although no doubt not a franchise) however this isn't quite as cutting edge or particularly representative of what they do although of course worthy of inclusion nonetheless.  Tie snakes is the theme here set against a fern backdrop.  We dont wish to be uncharitable (and lets not forget we usually gush uncontrollably at this brands installations) with this scheme although perhaps it needs a bit more love and attention?

Tods, Copenhagen

The latest offering at Tods here in Copenhagen is clearly referencing travel and in particular sea travel.  We would have to delve a little deeper into their collections to understand the connection here and what cant be seen in a still image is the use of video through the portholes.  We haven't checked to see whether this scheme has been installed in London yet or whether this an example of localised creativity but a great quality scheme nonetheless.

Gant, Copenhagen

This brand in London (and NYC) produce some amazing schemes at their flagship stores so we are guessing that this store is a little further down the pecking order to receive the same love and attention?  That said, this is of course a great way to show what is quite a dull product (i.e. men's shirts not the brands collections).  A panel of White shorts has been punctuated with illuminated ones to highlight the brands different ranges.  This is a great statement at this store which in context is surrounded by brands we dont know with little or no window schemes to show you.

Magasin, Copenhagen

This store really does look impressive from the outside with an incredible facade and a mecca for all things luxury and mid-range.  When the store is buzzing with crowds during the afternoon you wont notice that it is looking a little tired on the inside with missing floor tiles and the 'ghosts' of brands' fixtures which appear have been ripped out in a hurry and tape to cordon off areas just in case you capture a glimpse of the crime scene beyond.  On a positive note the store have at least made an effort to bring the window scheme into the store itself although perhaps we are spoiled with the likes of Selfridges, Harvey Nichols, Barneys and Bergdorf's where the benchmark is set a lot higher?

Hay, Copenhagen

If you love all things Skandi then you will love this store.  This is probably the biggest store that this brand have in Copenhagen although we have spotted a few others around the city.  While there are no windows as such to this particular site there is this amazing entrance which takes you up to the store presented over two floors punctuated with an amazing staircase.  If you like to see some great interior pieces then put this store on your list.

Illum, Copenhagen

For the rest of this week we are here in Copenhagen to have a look at this city's' latest schemes and to say its cold here is a slight understatement.  That said the warmth of the people in this country is astounding; everyone is so nice, helpful and so cheery which makes our journey so much easier.  Our first stop had to be Illum and what an incredible department store this is too.  This is possibly the equivalent of Selfridges in London which houses stunning products from the luxury brands over several floors.  A great window scheme draws you in (although we are not quite sure what this is actually about).  Budgerigars on metal cubed frames form the backdrop to their fantastic products.  The only disappointment here is that there is so little visually in store so once they get you in through the doors its just like any other mid-range department store around the world which is a shame as there is so much potential for this amazing place.

Diptyque, London

We love the products at this brand and just look at this store too..!  The team at www.millington-associates.com worked with the brands team in Paris to create this scheme which was inspired by paper theatres sold by the founders of Diptyque during the 1960's.  Creating a backstage set using traditional Red velvet curtains, ropes, antiqued pulleys, faux brick walls and stunning Red antique chairs, this scheme looks fantastic and great references to brand heritage here.

Jack Wills, London

Jack Wills just gets better and better and great to see that they have recently launched their new Athleisure range at their store in Covent Garden here in the centre of it all.   With Athleisure products, from our observations, the preferred attire of so many travels and apparently a £7bn market in the UK alone it is great to see that this brand has their fingers on the pulse of the street.  The brands latest installation is a modern yet nostalgic reference to the gym environment complete with patinated props.

Clarks, London

Showing shoes by the truck load is clearly well and truly relegated to the archives of this brand as they forge ahead once more like they own the high street.  With just one, yes one product in their flagship store windows right now supported with a giant graphic background their confidence as a retailer seems to know no boundaries and we welcome this approach wholeheartedly.  Enough of our gushing though.

John Lewis, London

Apparently in 2017 it is predicted (from the trend reports we read) that we will all be micro-clanning and digital cocooning.  What this means is that we will only follow and surround ourselves with like minded people and develop more intimate friendships based on similar beliefs.  While we cant suggest that this scheme had this in mind while it was being developed it is interesting that it seems to inextricably linked. So, stock up with their latest digital offering at John Lewis and get out there and Flourish.
