Henri Bendel, New York

It was a very cold and dark night on 5th avenue when we took this and we were quite jet lagged from travelling however what we did notice was there were quite a few empty store units which have been carefully covered over, possibly just for the holiday season.  After a quick glance across the net, it seems that this store closed down in January this year and along with Barneys, yes Barneys too, this leaves some huge holes along this iconic street.  Very sad times indeed.

Henri Bendel, New York

That New York skyline certainly gets a lot of mileage in windows each year.  The hand drawn element seems to be quite an influence across schemes this season as we've spotted it both at Anthropologie and Liberty back in London.  We have ventured slightly over the threshold of this store in their prime space although 5th Avenue although there wasn't really much visually included in store which would have drawn us in further.

Henri Bendel, New York

As its been a year since we visited this store, the large tree at the centre of this space has completely gone (maybe it was only seasonal anyway?)  This isn't the best scheme we've seen from this brand although it is quite an interesting one with its glittery narrative back drop.  Other than that there isn't much else we can mention.

Henri Bendel, New York

Now this is a bit of a corker of a scheme.  Since the take over, buy out, financial help or whatever you want to call it, of Barneys, they have gone a bit generic, and it has been a case of, in the words of (possibly) Mr. Chow, 'sionara bitches' to the old schemes of papier mache,  clever caustic humour and whole load of personality.  Anyway, it appears that Bendels have picked up the baton and produced this fantastic scheme, all mache'd beautifully.  Notice the references to the hand drawn here.  To really appreciate it, this a video we made earlier.

Henri Bendel, New York

Wow, you must go and see Henri Bendels scheme along 5th Avenue right now.  With their mannequin 'dressed' in multiples of tiny beans, accessorised with Liberty's torch this really is great fun.  Suspended illuminated and spinning frames hang just inside the store with references to the Rockettes.  We particularly love the decorated chandeliers inside, but you'll have to and see these for yourself.  We've made a video if this store for you to feel the experience yourself - at least in part.  Click here to view.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FB8-41bzTiw&list=UUsubIQJFMNM6ZVPlgxA4MaQ&index=7&feature=plcp

Henri Bendel, New York

Although the jet lag is kicking quite nicely and therefore I am awake incredibly early, its cold outside and the uncontrollable heating in my hotel room is on full whack, even with the window open wide I cant seem to get the temperature right. So I'm waking up with a mouth as dry as the Sahara and very hot feet - my room is as long as I am tall and half as wide. Still you get what you pay for and I cant complain, particularly when I don't spend too much time there as there are so many delicious schemes to look at such as this one here at Henri Bendel on 5th Avenue. I have always found this a rather odd store as it is a bit of a one of a kind, but as always, even with the tiny space they have they do present the most incredible schemes. The figures here are completely covered in tiny beads in Brown and White stripes (the Bendel Brand signature) and within the store which is laid out a bit like a Moroccan riad is an enormous tree wrapped in tiny lights from which a bed with another figure has been suspended. I particularly love the colour of the fixtures in an Orange/Red tone which works beautifully with the Bendel Brown.
