Leigh Bowery: Tell Them I've Gone to Papua New Guinea, London

As there is so little out there on the high street that's visual we've been looking around for some inspiration for potential retail store windows.  If you were around London during the late 80's and early 90's you would have probably come across the likes of Leigh Bowery.  We first became aware of him during a production of Because we Must by the super talented Micheal Clark at the Sadlers Well Theatre in 1987 and subsequently through the nightlub scene of the time.  If you have a moment do investigate this tiny snapshot of the period with a wonderful video narrative which include anecdotes from people who knew him well.  https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/leigh-bowery-tell-them-ive-gone-to-papua-new-guinea-tickets-223359483227

Miu Miu, London

This windows at this brand dont change very often (we seem to think possibly once a year - we may be wrong of course although these schemes are not dramatic changes for us to notice otherwise) but just look at this glossy little number.  Superbly presented and super sparkly, illuminated Gold.  Gold figures, Gold flooring and Gold side walls.  You have to see this in person and from a distance however to truly appreciate the impact it has.  Very beautiful.

Emporio Armani, London

We've seen a lot of collaborations over the years and this usually involves ones with brands and various Artists (with the exception of course of H&M) however it is quite interesting to see two similar-ish brands come together to produce work and in this case we have Emporio Armani and C.P. Company  (Both celebrating milestone anniversaries,  40 and 50 years respectively).   While neither brand is particularly interesting to look at the quality of the products is beautiful.

Saint Laurent, London

We seem to recall that this was the Celine store at one time although we can't remember before that time as these luxury brands are constantly moving to different sides of Bond street.  We've never included this brand before although they don't tend to do very much regarding Visual Merchandising so there hasnt been a lot to share.  We were however struck by these interesting and revloving lens structures placed in their windows and while not wildly exciting compared to pre-Christmas schemes (plus there is not a lot to select from out there at the moment either) we thought that they might be interesting to at least some of you reading this.

Orlebar Brown, London

Given the season / time of year, this scheme jumped out at us immediately.  With remnants of Christmas schemes or Christmas schemes but with Sale signs across the majority of stores we couldnt work out initially if this brand had missed the mark or was pure genius.  We've realised that it is the latter although of course this is what they specialise in and while its cold and wet here in London, it is Summer somewhere in the world and we will live in an international city.  So, if you are looking for shorts, T-shirts, sunglasses and..erm....rash guards (better not to ask) then look no further.

Furla, London

This brand has never been one of out go-to's for great presentation however just look at them now.  Wow, they've really upped their game with this installation.  What is difficult to appreciate in a still image is the backdrop here which while illuminated moves as if its raining on the product.  We have however included a short video on our Insta and Facebook pages (links below).  

In the meantime, its looking very thin on Sale schemes out there at the moment so we may need to space out our entries for a short while until things pick up with new installations.

Acne Studios, London

We saw this scheme on social media recently but have completely forgotten what it was about.  Anyway, while this was the brands seasonal offer, thankfully it is not necessarily Christmas themed so we have decided that it was fine to include anyway.  This is our final post, obvs, for 2021 so we will wish you a wonderful 2022 now so that we can take a short break before we launch our next batch of images from stores around town.

Bottletop, London

We seem to recall that this is the old J Crew store along Regent street however it has now been taken over by Bottletop.  If you are not familiar with them they are a sustainable brand with an incredible story to tell. We had no idea that they have done so much with this brand and they really are worth checking out.  Do have a look at their website as there is a huge amount of information about the work they do and we are guessing that these windows represent the future.

Delvaux, London

There's nothing worse than viewing Christmas schemes after the event.  However, we had a think about this scheme and decided that it was rather more seasonal than Christmas specific and therefore ok to share.  Mind you, there isnt a lot out there at the moment anyway so we may need to take a break for a week or two while the various teams have the time to change their schemes.  In the meantime, enjoy.

Ermenegildo Zegna, London

While this isnt the most exciting installation we have seen from this brand the product looks incredible.  While we are unlikely to find ourselves skiing anytime soon, if we were, how wonderful to have this collection of gorgeous products.  In the meantime, there is quite an unusual sculptural piece just inside the store which we've included here in the image down below.

Agent Provocateur, London

This brands' store in New York, while small in size always looks so incredible at this time of year. In fact, we actually included one of their schemes in the latest edition of our book.  This store however does appear rather unloved and in need of some much needed VM tlc, don't you think?  Sale time is never a good look for any store although we did actually capture this before the holidays so we would have thought that perhaps a more polished scheme might be in place.  To be fair though, like just every other retailer out there on the high street they have probably had a rough time this year so perhaps we shouldnt be so harsh?

Mulberry, London

This brand once had huge windows at this store along Bond street which were filled with enormous narratives on a rolling basis.  However with open backed windows, schemes do become a bit limiting as you also have to consider the view of the window from inside the store which makes it difficult to hide any necessary adjustments to the products (not that handbags need this of course) plus we have the ugly security grilles too after a series of robberies along this street. However it is great to see that the brand have added this wonderful curved fabric backdrop to hide all of these elements in order to create a context for their products and great colour combinations too.

Breitling, London

This brand isnt huge on their Visual Merchandising but on occasion they really do it very well.  Just look at this installation at their institutional complement along Bond street.  As we capture schemes mostly at night time the product has been removed for security but you can still appreciate the quality of their work.
