VM and Display Awards 2016, London

If you were unable or didn't attend the VM and Display Awards 2016 then you really did miss a corker of an evening.  The entries this year were staggeringly good and demonstrated the breadth of creativity from around the world and the finest brands from an enormous cross section of the high street.  Visual Merchandising industry suppliers, visitors and some of the top Visual Merchandisers from around the globe descended on the Bloomsbury Big Top on Thursday evening hosted by the very charming Rylan Clark.  A huge congratulations to the winners and those shortlisted this year.

Galeria Kaufhof, Frankfurt

We dont often receive images of windows from Frankfurt, or indeed have the opportunity to go and visit this city ourselves.  We were very excited to see that there is a huge amount of creativity happening beyond our usual stomping grounds and this scheme at Galeria Kaufhof is no exception.  Produced by Grosse8, the scheme contains a variety of toys and gifts which hover on White clouds with interactive elements such as an airship which delivers gifts and Styrofoam snowflakes which are blown into the air.  To really appreciate this scheme of course you should go and see it if you can, although the next best thing would be to view the video below.

Salvatore Ferragamo, London

The Salvatore Ferragamo store along Sloane street is looking far more interesting than the Bond street one for some reason.  Stacked luggage, all perfectly produced of course supports the product emerging from the top with a beautifully made model of....well, who knows where?  The additional windows have been presented in a symmetrical format against this 'quilted' backdrop.

Fendi, London

We are guessing that this installation is highlighting the brands 'Hypnoteyes' products which seems to reflect the kind of thing a lot of brands in the luxury sector are doing right now.  We do find whimsical products rather buttock clenching ourselves and it really doesn't do anything for us personally although these child-like creatures seem to be snapped up by a market who, from the outside looking in, love to be perpetually afflicted with a case of cultural arrested development? Ultimately perhaps this is where the market is and those are the customers with the cash right now we image?  On a final note, the use of fur in the products here is really not necessary is it?

Joseph, London

If you want to see an example of Visual Merchandising at its best then look no further than Joseph here in the centre of it all.  We are always impressed with the intelligence of the schemes here where no surface approach is adopted but really interesting thinking behind their schemes.  In this beautiful monochromatic scheme capturing the season so beautifully, this brand remains one of our top favourites throughout 2016.

Fortnum and Mason, London

This season is one that just keeps on giving and we still have a lot of brands to get through before the big day itself in December.  We have been looking out for the Christmas scheme at Fortnum's for quite some time and naturally they never disappoint.  The detail that has gone into this scheme is quite staggering and no doubt many months of planning behind it.  This brands 'Together we're Merrier' campaign is quite a corker but as always its much better seeing these things in life if you can so that you can fully immerse yourself in the experience.

Moncler, London

We don't see queue's of people outside of stores here in London very often unless there is some over hyped collaboration between a luxury and fast fashion brand however, there are queues outside of the Moncler store along Bond street.  OK, well the product is superb of course although cheaper versions of this stuff are available at Uniqlo if you like looking like an Italian tourist.  The scheme of course, for such a tiny space is superbly clever and we are huge fans of their schemes.  In this case, the brand are playing on the ski season with huge doses of humour thrown in.

Belstaff, London

This is a simple yet impactful scheme at Belstaff which captures the season so well and not a Christmas tree or bauble in sight.  Snow covered mountain peaks, and thats it, have been placed behind the mannequins here and perfectly allows the passerby to see into and around the interior space.  A great and original solution.

Dior, London

Like a Phoenix out of the ashes the schemes here are absolutely rocking the high street yet again.  With their amazing mirrored perspective and mirrored baubles the installation at Dior is super shiny and incredibly glossy at their store along Bond street here in the centre of it all.  We dont tend to shop here ourselves but if we were the target audience we would certainly be enticed into their spaces.  Superb stuff.

Coach, London

If you like a bag charm then this is a cool piece from Coach this season.  With their 'ice block' pyramidal format and repetition of these dinosaurs this is quite an interesting seasonal solution from this brand.  Do check out Coach's Regent street store too however as they have life sized (well sort of) versions of these in bright neon lights filling their enormous window spaces which really are making an impact across the central London shopping zone.

Hermes, London

We do tend to gush quite a lot at this brands installations but then when a brand does such amazing work and their stores' windows around the world vary so much who could blame us?  Beautiful props and an array of insects there appear to be a lot of references around town in Christmas schemes to the natural world.  Check out our YouTube video to see a better view of this scheme.

Tiffany, London

Masters of all things in miniature and faux perspectives, it has to be Tiffany.  We are always amazed at the level of detail in the schemes at this brand and how delicate the props are but equally how they manage to produce so many of them across all of their stores.  This is no easy task.  Their Christmas scheme of course does have a nod to New York and while this isn't a problem to us, London, as with any other city do have their own unique landmarks and celebrate the season in their own way and therefore a much more 'Glocal' approach would have been appreciated.  This would have added yet another layer of complexity to an already complex process but would be more meaningful to the relevant city in which the stores are placed that's all.
